How Can Companies Contribute to The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, also known as SDGs, are a collection of 17 goals formed by the UN General Assembly in 2015, and these goals are expected to be achieved by 2030. These SDGs are essential to ending or significantly reducing the immediate challenges faced by the world. By the end of 2030, all the countries should meet the basic needs of food, employment, energy, water, and sanitation.
Ways Companies Can Contribute to The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Companies can significantly contribute toward the fulfilment of sustainable goals in multiple ways. Here’s how.
Using affordable and clean energy
Goal No. 7 of the SDGs refers to access to clean energy and production techniques that focus on sustainable energy consumption. Renewable resources are becoming cheaper and cheaper in recent years and more efficient as well.
The most widely used energy source globally and in India is fossil fuels, which have a huge negative impact on the environment and are unsustainable. Advanced technologies should be used for the use of more sustainable forms of energy sources like solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy, biomass, etc. We should aim at using such sustainable sources of energies in our production processes and gradually reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
Responsible consumption and production
Goal No. 12 of SDGs requires us to ensure sustainable consumption and production of goods and services that improve the quality of life. The population is increasing daily, and catering to everybody’s needs is crucial while using sustainable methods and opting for environment-friendly options in producing and consuming goods and services.
Responsible consumption and production can be achieved by reducing the waste in the production processes, efficiently using the raw material, smart and sustainable use of the waste and waste material, etc. The SDG 12 can be reached by continuous and conscious efforts by all – the government, the policymakers, the manufacturers, and the workers. Reducing and reusing is one of the important keys to arriving at sustainable production.
Climate Action
SDG Goal No. 13 states that urgent action must be taken to combat climate change and its growing environmental impacts. Climate change is caused due to CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases.
The ill effects of climate change will drastically change the world we live in unless we take concrete action now. It is also expected to impact the livelihoods of the people. Manufacturing companies can play a significant role in addressing the growing concerns over climate change by adopting sustainable methods and practices, creating better working conditions, and offering a better quality of life to their workers.
Companies can contribute to fulfilling the SDG goal by reducing carbon emissions, decarbonizing their operations and methods, reducing the carbon footprint of the products and processes, and investing in developing innovative low-carbon products and services.
Being aware of the importance of sustainability processes, making efforts to eliminate unsustainable production methods, and using modern technology for sustainable sources of energy will be the pathway to SDGs 2030 for People – Planet – Prosperity.
